What is Krav Maga?
----------------------------

Krav Maga (pronounced KRAHV muh-gah , which is Hebrew for "contact combat") is a simple, aggressive, easy to learn and easy to
remember self-defense system. Krav Maga was developed in a hostile environment which did not allow Israeli soldiers much time
to learn self-defense techniques.

Krav Maga is not pretty to watch. It does not have elegant movements and is probably not the idea that most people have a martial art
such as Kung Fu, Tai Chi or Judo. Krav Maga is purely and simply for simple and aggressive movements aimed at self-defense.
Krav Maga is, unlike many other systems, especially a survival system developed for personal safety. It is a modern self defense
system which is designed to be used against unarmed and armed attackers and against multiple assailants. Within Krav Maga
there are no kata or forms, rules or set combinations for specific attacks.

Krav Maga training focuses on teaching simple self defense techniques based on the natural reactions of the human body. This means that techniques are applicable in more than one position, making it possible to learn a few techniques that work against many different attacks. Krav Maga training therefore focuses more on principles than on techniques. This is because no two attacks are the same. In addition, anyone who is facing a threat one day will react differently than the other days.

"Krav Maga. So One May Walk in Peace."

A method based on self-defense principles
------------------------------------------------------------
Krav Maga is primarily a no-nonsense system that is designed to teach fighting spirit and an aggressive attitude to their students. The ultimate goal of Krav Maga is to always come home safe. To achieve this it is necessary to respond decisively and aggressively to a violent assault.

The principles of the Krav Maga system forms:

Do not get hurt. This was the main principle in Krav Maga. This basic principle dictates that every effort should be taken to - where possible - avoid a conflict. If this is not possible, it is necessary to respond aggressively to the threat to abolish it and to neutralize the attacker.

Train from a disadvantage. How alert you are, there is always a question of distraction. Krav Maga training, therefore forces students to train from a poor state of readiness. Assuming that it is very likely that a defender will be forced to act when he or she is unprepared, it is often practiced during training from the "neutral" position. This position forces student to perform techniques without taking into account proper footwork, with the right hand position, balance, weight, etc.
To be as effective as possible in a real situation, we must assume that we did not see the attack coming. This is an important element of the Krav Maga training.
Recognize and neutralize the immediate threat. Without first addressing the immediate danger, no technique or resolution will be successful. Often valuable time is lost while we are engaged with elements of the attack is not immediately dangerous. Krav Maga emphasizes the immediate danger and should be solved first in the most efficient manner.
Take advantage of the natural body reactions. While other systems or styles teach techniques which (under certain circumstances) are considered as "better" these techniques often work against the natural reaction of our body and require extensive time in training. This kind of techniques work less well if there is stress (in a violent encounter).

Krav Maga emphasizes that fine motor control is much less effective under the influence of adrenaline in a stressful situation. That's why Krav Maga techniques use gross motor skills and natural body movements. This approach increases the likelihood of successful execution of a technique during the stress of a real-life violent encounter. It also reduces the amount of training required for a reasonable level of skill to achieve.

For the average person, and that is the basis for Krav Maga is much more intensive training and often impossible. Krav Maga training recognises that there are three possible reactions of the body by violence or fear, they are fight, flee or freeze.
Krav Maga training workout includes exercises to promote how to properly respond to stress, where the defender quickly moves from
passive to an active attitude.

Secondary hazards that may arise in the attack. Identifying and disabling the primary hazard (eg strangulation) is necessary for a successful defense. It is also equally important to prevent possible attacks continued to identify and anticipate. Effectively eliminating or avoiding an attack may be continued by applying the Krav Maga principles, such as the time and place to defend against an attack and explosive response.

Use a counterattack as soon as possible, preferably simultaneously with the defensive technique. A powerful counterattack is essential for a realistic defense. A powerful and aggressive counterattack is aimed at disrupting ongoing attack. It forces the attacker to react to the defender instead of being able to continue his attack. The sooner a counterattack is successful, the sooner it is possible to rotate the roles, the prey is the hunter. Remember that criminals mostly look for a victim and not a fight. Therefore, an aggressive and immediate counter-attack will surprise the attacker, so this gives the defender to flee from the attacker. But with only a self-defense technique (eg liberation from a strangulation) this is not a battle won!

Point the attack on the vulnerable parts of the body. A viable self-defense system should never be based on the physical condition of the defender. Krav Maga emphasizes why attacks against the vulnerabilities of the body such as eyes, jaw, throat, liver, kidneys, cross, fingers, knees and rubbed. Attacks on these body parts to cause maximum damage with minimum effort and strength.

Analyze the immediate area and adjust them to counterattack. Violent attacks occur rarely in a controlled environment. Krav Maga emphasizes the need to evaluate the environment to ensure the correct action.
Krav Maga training also encourages the use of objects that can be found at the scene of the conflict. These may be objects that offensive (eg blunt object to hit) or defensive (eg chair as a shield) can be used in order to increase the chance of survival.
This is extremely important because fighting rarely "fair". If someone intends to harm someone else, then the defender do whatever it is, with everything available. This principle applies no matter what the situation is. Fights are dynamic, and opportunities can change in an instant. Krav Maga emphasizes that a defender should do everything necessary to safely get home.

Mentality: never give up. Krav Maga will make every effort to ensure, through special (stress) drills, a "fighting
spirit" to develop a never give up spirit in each student. When there are multiple potential risk factors that may determine outcome of a conflict. Most
of these factors, however - at first - usually are determined by the attacker. With that in mind, it can sometimes be that the "fighting spirit" as Krav Maga develope,s during  training is the only factor that has control over the defender. It should therefore be developed continuously.

Bring yourself into safety. Ultimately, the goal is to safely get home. Krav Maga training stresses the utmost importance to aggressively defend yourself and to ensure that the threat no longer exists. We must ensure that we do not stay any longer than neccessary in a conflict situation. As time passes, the likelihood that other variables (introduction of weapons, extra attackers, fatigue, etc.) will come into play. Therefore this requires the defender to leave the conflict as quickly as possible.
Remember, violent encounters are unique, and the situation will dictate the response, including the time for safe escape.

Do not exceed what is necessary. As previously mentioned, the purpose of Krav Maga training to improve survivability. Krav Maga is, by necessity, an aggressive and powerful system. However,It should be clear that self-defense should never go into punishment.

Eliminating the threat means that we do just enough to escape. As a defender, it is not acceptable to impose revenge or punishment on the attacker. This is not only morally unacceptable, but more importantly, it is especially tactically unsound, because the defender can run the risk that the fight keeps going. Often liberation and then escape is the best solution.

The above principles are the basis for our techniques and Krav Maga training. If there is a 'lesser' technique or a variation of a technique proposed
, then the technique is evaluated based on the principles underlying the Krav Maga system is based.

The history of the system
--------------------------
The founder of Krav Maga, Imi (Imrich) Sde-Or (Lichtenfeld), was born in 1910 in Budepest. He grew up in Bratislava in a family where major sports and humanity were important values. Imi's father, Samuel Lichtenfeld, joined a circus at a young age. In the circus he met many people who practiced many sports. These people taught Imi's father everything they knew about their sport. These sports were also martial arts and self defense methods. After leaving the circus Samuel Lichtenfeld joined the municipal police.

As a child Imi was taught by his father in several sports, including gymnastics. He even took part in the lessons that were given
to police. Encouraged by his father, Imi excelled in many disciplines, such as swimming, gymnastics, wrestling and boxing. In
1928 Imi won the Slovakian Youth Wrestling Championship title in 1929 the champion title for adults. Also that year he became
national champion in boxing. In the ensuing decade, Imi focused mainly on wrestling, both as participant and as a trainer. Imi was
seen as one of the best European wrestlers.
Mid thirties living in Bratislava began to change. Fascism began to emerge. Within the Jewish community Imi was part of a group of Jewish boys who were proficient in boxing, wrestling and weightlifting. This group tried to keep antisemietic gangs outside the
Jewish quarter. Between 1936 and 1940, Imi therefore often faced violent confrontations and street battles. These violent confrontations encouraged Imi to develope Krav Maga

Just before the fascists took power in 1940, Imi left his home, family and friends and boarded a ship destined for Palestine. After various wanderings and an active role during the Second World Imi got permission to settle in Palestine. At that time (1942) he had many friends of the Imi Haganah movement. This was the military organization which later became the IDF (Israel Defense Forces). Imi was presented to General Itzchak Sadeh, head of the Haganah, who immediately took up the organization because there was a need for someone with experience in hand-to-hand combat.

In 1944 Imi began training of Israeli troops. It emphasized physical fitness, swimming, being able to use a knife and defend against the attack with a knife. Several elite units of the Palmach and Haganah (forerunner of the special units of the IDF) as well as the units of the Palyam (naval command) and police forces were trained by Imi. Imi spent about twenty years in the IDF and in that time the self-defense techniques were developed and refined.

After his return from active Imi developed Krav Maga so that soldiers alongside civilians could make use of it. In order to spread his method there were two schools founded by Imi. One in Tel Aviv and Netanya (residence). During that time he still remained as advisor and Krav Maga instructor to the IDF and other Israeli security units. In 1972, the first civilian course for Krav Maga instructors started the Wingate Institute of Sport and Physical Education. Since then, this method of self defense ihas spread all over the world. In 1978, Imi and several of his followers found the Israeli Krav Maga Association (IKMA), whose main aim is to spread Krav Maga throughout Israel and abroad.

Imi Lichtenfeld died in January 1998

Krav Maga Woldwide
----------------------------

Imi began in the sixties, with military approval to teach Krav Maga to civilians in Israel. In 1981 the Krav Maga
Association and the Ministry of Education held the first international instructor course at Wingate Institute for Physical Education. A generous philanthropist from New York sponsored a delegation of 23 participants from different cities in the United States to attend this course. The course was supervised by Imi, currently 71 years old, and taught by Krav Maga instructors Shike main barracks, and Eyal Yanilov Ruevin Moimon. Darren Levine was selected as one of the 23 delegates because of his background in martial arts and boxing, and for his work at a school near Los Angeles.

The course was an intensive six-week course of more than eight hours a day, for six days a week. The course was exhausting, and at
the end passed only six of the participants. Darren was one of them. During the course, Imi and Darren became friends. Imi promised Darren that he would be visiting the United States. Loyal to his word, Imi traveled in the summer of 1982 to Los Angeles and stayed there with Darren and his family, while Darren also taught Krav Maga
Darren continued his training in Krav Maga in 1984 and had continued its full instructor qualifications from the Wingate Institute. Imi was very proud of the growth and success of Krav Maga in the United States. In 1997, shortly after his sixth Dan grading obtained in Krav Maga, Imi presented  Darren with a Founder's Diploma for Special Excellence in Krav Maga. Besides Darren there was only one other person to receive this diploma. This other person was Yanilov Eyal, the director of the International Krav Maga Federation (IKMF).
In January 1999 Darren established Krav Maga Worldwide .Darren Levine was seen as one of the most appropriate persons to develop techniques, instructor trainingmto adapt  Krav Maga to the needs of U.S. citizens and police. Krav Maga Worldwide has had great success with the Krav Maga taught to hundreds of thousands of people around the world. In addition, the Krav Maga system is also approved and recognized by more than 200 law enforcement agencies.

Krav Maga Worldwide, is currently the largest organization in the world with more than 240 member schools. In addition, by Krav Maga Worldwide in the United States more than 500 law enforcement and government agencies and several specialized military units trained.

For over 14 years gives Thierry has taught Krav Maga. During that time many things changed in Krav Maga. What has not changed,
is the primary goal , which is offering the best self-defense and fitness training to his students.

In February 2006, together with Krav Maga Worldwide Thierry received Chief Instructor Europe"Train the Trainer" status and from
that position he created Krav Maga Worldwide Europe.

Thierry has significantly contributed to the growth of Krav Maga in Europe. Today, Krav Maga Worldwide Europe about 34 official
training centers in Europe.

Band System Krav Maga Worldwide
----------------------------------------------

Within the Krav Maga there is very different ideas about bands or other types of graduations. Krav Maga is a self defense method and
above all not a martial art. This makes it difficult to determine differences in levels. However, Krav Maga Worldwide with IMPACT introduced a band system. Each 'level', has a number of specific defensive tactics, techniques and ground fighting techniques appointed. Obtaining a band or level means you become proficient in all the techniques assoiciated with that level. Levels are particularly indicative of yourself, to find out where you stand in terms of learning
techniques. During the lessons belts are not worn.. Below are the links or 'levels' is shown with a brief description of what each
level is expected.

Level 1 Yellow belt Especially defenses against chokes, and basic combat techniques

Level 2 Orange belt Further attention to fighting techniques, defenses against bears seized, the introduction of ground
fighting, basic combat skills

Level 3 Green belt Further attention to fighting techniques, ground fighting and combat skills

Level 4 Blue belt Fighting techniques for advanced defenses against gun and stick, advanced combat skills and ground
fighting advanced

Level 5 Brown belt Advanced combat techniques, defenses against knife and gun fight on the ground for advanced

Level 6 Black belt Third-party protection, hostage scenarios and multiple attackers
